Packing Checklist

A starting list grouped the way gear goes into a pack. Edit freely: everything is saved in your browser (localStorage, oc.* keys) and never uploaded.

How the calculation works

The list starts from the standard five-group layout: shelter and sleep, clothing, kitchen and water, safety and navigation, repair and hygiene. Check items as they go into the pack, add trip-specific gear to any group, and use "remove packed items" to collapse the list once everything is in - the remaining unchecked lines are the things you forgot.

Once the gear is weighed, the backpack balance calculator tells you where the heavy zones belong, and the warmth calculator double-checks the shelter and sleep group against the forecast. The full packing logic lives in the backpack shoulders guide.

Planning estimate only - not safety advice.

Frequently asked questions

Is the list saved if I close the browser?

Yes - every check, added and removed item is written to localStorage in your browser under oc.* keys and restored on your next visit. Nothing is uploaded; clearing your browser storage clears the list.

Does this cover a specific trip type?

The defaults target a standard three-season backpacking overnight to week-long trip. Add what your trip needs - microspikes, bear canister, ropes - and delete what it does not. The categories mirror the order gear goes into a pack, so a checked list doubles as a packing instruction.

How heavy should the packed list be?

The calculator does not weigh anything - pair it with the <a href="/backpack-balance-calculator/">backpack balance calculator</a> once you know zone weights, and with the <a href="/backpacking-food-calculator/">food calculator</a> to size the kitchen. Placement beats gram-counting for comfort.

Can I print the list?

Yes - the print button strips the page down to the checklist itself: headers, ads and controls disappear, leaving a clean paper list for the garage floor.
